Police using facial recognition cameras at Victoria’s busiest stations – 25 December 2019
Victoria Police is quietly using a facial recognition technology called iFace to identify criminal suspects at 85 of the state’s busiest police stations. The program uses algorithms to measure features such as face width and the distance between nose, eyes and mouth before comparing the image against the facial characteristics of known offenders.
Police freeze $26m of Aussie tech unicorn’s funds after alleged fraud – 23 December 2019
Police have frozen $US18 million ($26 million) of Airwallex’s funds after the Australian fintech was involved in alleged fraud in Hong Kong. Airwallex enables customers to create international bank accounts instantly, access interbank exchange rates and send money through local and international clearing networks to more than 130 countries.
AUSTRAC revokes first crypto exchange licences – 20 December 2019
Australia’s anti-money laundering agency AUSTRAC has revoked the licences of three cryptocurrency exchange operators due to alleged criminal activity. Registrations belonged to AUSCOIN ATM and MK Buy & Sell,Webpark, which trades as Howzat Domains.

Teenager accused of scamming cryptocurrency in SIM swap grift – 20 December 2019
An alleged youth stole the identities of 75 people and swiped $US1 million ($A1.45 million) in cryptocurrency – all from the comfort of their apartment. He was able to do this by transferring phone numbers to his own phone and resetting passwords.
