Australia to amend laws to make Google and Facebook pay – 16 February 2021

Australia’s government will amend draft laws that would make Google and Facebook pay for news to clarify that publishers would be paid in lump sums rather than per click on news article links. Google has threatened to make its search engine unavailable in Australia if the code were introduced and Facebook said it might block Australians from sharing news if the platform were forced to pay for news. The code aims to remove the digital giants’ dominant bargaining positions but creating an arbitration panel with the power to make legally binding decisions on price.

Email, SMS vaccine scams on the way: cyber experts – 16 February 2021

Cyber experts and authorities are warning of an inundation of vaccine scams, as Australia prepares to distribute COVID-19 vaccines from February 22. The roll-out of the vaccine in the US and Britain has inspired many vaccine related scams, with a 300 per cent jump in vaccine-related website domains in the lead-up to the first jabs being distributed.
