Australia’s Human Rights Law Centre has called for greater transparency to be given to the Federal Government’s recently launched Coronavirus Australia app. – 8 April 2020

The Coronavirus Australia App has been downloaded over 500,000 times in Australia, however there is little publicly available information about what data is being collected from people and how that private information is being used and kept safe.

Global bank HSBC owns up to potential anti-money laundering law breaches – 8 April 2020

HSBC has disclosed itself to Australia’s financial crime agency for potential breaches of anti-money laundering laws by failing to report transfers to foreign banks and institutions. The number of potential reporting breaches by HSBC is understood to be in the thousands. Under Australian regulations, such breaches carry fines of up to $21m per offence.

Protection of whistleblowers vital during COVID-19 – 6 April 2020

Australian and international research confirms that employees and officials are the single most important and fastest way wrongdoing or mistakes are brought to light in organisations. The COVID-19 crisis demonstrates a growing demand for strong public accountability and the importance of whistleblower protection, yet law reforms are overdue in Federal parliament.
