Justice overhaul amid Vic COVID-19 fight – 20 April 2020
Under temporary laws, Judge-only trials will be allowed in Victoria during the coronavirus pandemic. Magistrates will also be able to impose electronic monitoring conditions for community correction orders, which can currently only be ordered by the superior courts.

The company ‘Ripple’ is suing YouTube, alleging the video-sharing platform failed to protect consumers from cryptocurrency ‘giveaway’ scams that use fake social media profiles to dupe victims into sending money.

Students alarmed at Australian universities’ plan to use exam-monitoring software – 20 April 2020
Privacy experts criticise plans to use software to monitor students through webcams as they take exams at home during the coronavirus pandemic. The software requires students to upload biometric information such as their photo ID before exams, and potentially grant access to their computer’s webcam, microphone and keystrokes to prevent cheating.
Selling the surveillance state – 18 April 2020
The Prime Minister has a huge task in selling a ‘contact tracing/tracking app to Australians. With a target of 40% of Australians using the APP, he says it’s a “sacrifice” people need to make. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute, says we need to ensure the datasets are not abused and privacy controls are implemented.
